I RACCONTI DEL COSTUME
Subject and Treatment: RACHELE MASCI and BENEDETTA LELLI
Director: RACHELE MASCI
Genre: Documentary
Duration: 60 minutes
Synopsis:
There are costumes that have become iconic in the history of world cinema. What would "The Leopard" be without Claudia Cardinale being cinched into that corset designed by Piero Tosi? And isn't the first image that comes to mind from "The Great Beauty" the monochrome jackets worn by Jep Gambardella, the king of parties? Yet, few truly realize the importance of the work done by film costume designers - "the work is there, but it's invisible." We have decided to delve into this world, fully aware that the cinematic language is primarily visual, consisting of close-ups, extreme close-ups, and details that give value to a jacket, a glove, or a hat. In this perspective, the costume is not just a decorative element but an "element of the form and content of the story itself": the costume designer interprets the director's vision, narrates the era, and outlines the psychology of the characters.
This documentary will unveil the artistic and artisanal work that begins with the threads of the costume until it becomes the character's second skin. Starting from the garments, sketches, and intuition. From the choices of colors, fabrics, and details. A narrative entrusted to Italy's most beloved costume designers, both nationally and internationally, the ones sought after by Italian and international filmmakers: Piero Tosi, Gabriella Pescucci, Gianna Gissi, Daniela Ciancio, Lina Nerli Taviani... Our journey starts among the fabrics of neorealism and reaches contemporary cinema. With one idea in mind: "The costume is not just what you put on, the costume in every era is the result of a particular moment, a historical, political, economic, artistic, and cultural moment…"
